What is CE Marking?

CE Marking is a key indicator of a product’s compliance with European legislation and enables its free movement within the European Economic Area, comprising the 27 Member States – Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxemburg, Malta, Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, United Kingdom – plus Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Turkey, reaching a population of nearly 600 million.

 

Why is CE Marking necessary?

The CE Marking states that your product has been accessed before being placed on the market and meets EU safety, health and environmental protection requirements.

 

As a manufacturer, it’s your responsibility to evaluate the conformity of your product, set up the technical file, sign a CE Declaration Conformity and visibly affix the CE Marking to your product.

As a distributor, you must verify both the CE Marking and the required technical documentation of your product.

If you are importing from a country outside EU, you must verify that the manufacturer has undertaken the necessary steps and that the documentation is available upon request.

The CE Marking must be affixed prior to commercializing your product.

 

How to achieve the CE Marking?

Step 1 – Identification of the European Directive/s and Harmonised Standards applicable to your product

Step 2 – Verify the product-specific requirements

Step 3 – Identify whether an independent conformity assessment is required from a Notified Body

Step 4 – Test the product and check its conformity

Step 5 – Draw up and keep available the required technical documentation

Step 6 – Affixation of the CE Marking to your product and CE Declaration of Conformity
