BUROTEC developed RBI following the principles set out in API 581 API 580. The Risk-Based Inspection methodology is based on API RP-580 and API PUB-581 standards and that it characterizes the risk associated with static components of a corrosion-free production system, based on analysis of historical fault behavior, modes of degradation or deterioration, design features, operating conditions, Maintenance, inspection and management policies while taking into account the quality and effectiveness of the inspection, as well as the consequences associated with potential failures.
The fundamental objective of the RBI is to define inspection plans based on the probabilistic characterization of deterioration and probabilistic modelling of the consequence of a failure (risk characterization).
There is an "Enhanced RBI Methodology or Integrated Methodology for Mechanical Asset Integrity" based on the integration of Risk-Based Inspection methodologies, "Corrosion Risk Assessment" (Vrc)"", Mechanical Integrity (Im) and probabilistic modelling of deterioration, which allows to expand the spectrum of coverage of deterioration mechanisms considered in the classic approach of the IBR. Risk-based inspection follows the methodology below:
- Collecting data and information.
- Risk analysis.
- Consequence assessment.
- Assessing the probability of failure (times/year).
- Risk assessment (through risk matrix).
- Risk classification.
- Review of the inspection plan.
- Reassessment of the inspection plan.
Operators in industries that apply RBI can get the following benefits:
- Better knowledge of equipment that could pose a potential risk
- More reliable operation of the plant and equipment
- Increased security
- Cost optimization by applying non-invasive inspection techniques
- Possibility to adapt the scope of the stop to each case
- Option to extend uptime when local law allows
- Increased teamwork during process development
- Developing a database with the design of the equipment, process characteristics, harmful mechanisms and inspection strategies
BUROTEC Risk-Based Inspection methodology (Ibr) is an analysis tool that estimates the risk associated with operating static equipment and assesses the effectiveness of the inspection plan (current or potential) reducing that risk.
